La noche en que Buenos Aires le cantó cumpleaños a Charly García

La ciudad se quiso hacer a la altura de Charly García. Desde la noche del jueves, un grupo de enthusiasts installed themselves at the corner of Santa Fe and Coronel Díaz with posters and songs, waiting for midnight with the same devotion that García has been receiving for decades. The scene had little of a formal concert and much of a neighborhood celebration: neighbors, fans and strangers sharing a chorus at the corner, while the musician watched from his balcony, greeted them and thanked them for being there.

Una birthday with the city's soundtrack

The program continued on Friday with the Usina del Arte, which scheduled three free nights with advance reservations for entry. Marina Wil opened the series on Friday with a repertoire of the musician's best-known songs. On Saturday, Mery Granados and Joaco Burgos led an evening dedicated to his work, and on Sunday Vanessa Alanís took over with a family-oriented spectacle. The agenda was not limited to the Usina: the Banda Sinfónica de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires also offered a Friday concert of national rock at the Centro Cultural 25 de Mayo, with Luis Ceravolo and Ángela Navarro, likewise with free admission and prior reservation.

“60 years of friendship don't go unnoticed. Thank you.”Nito Mestre

The written tributes were as moving as the applause. David Lebón, with whom García was part of Serú Girán, wrote: "You're much more than a friend, you're a brother who gave me life and music. Thank you for so many shared moments and, above all, for convincing me to go to Búzios. I love you, brother." Fito Páez shared several photographs with García and added: "Happy birthday to one of the people I love most in this world. Without him, I don't know if I would have discovered all the worlds I discovered." Their messages, like the balcony greeting, made clear that the anniversary was also a celebration of shared history and personal affection.

"Say No More" and the promise of a documentary

The audiovisual announcement added another layer to the birthday. Netflix confirmed the production of "Say No More", a documentary about García directed by Alejandro Hartmann and produced by Haddock Films. The release date has not been announced, so there is no calendar commitment for now, but the project guarantees that the story of the musician will continue beyond this round of concerts and tributes. García's reaction was concise: "Now yes, Charly by Charly. Good, isn't it?" The phrase also works as a playful announcement: after decades of being the subject of songs, interviews and memories, the artist is now preparing to tell his own story in a documentary.

The birthday also brought back a landmark from his career: the 1986 concert in Plaza de Mayo recorded for the NBC network, in which García appeared alongside Richard Coleman, Daniel Melingo, Andrés Calamaro, Christian Basso and Fernando Samalea. That memory helps place the evening in context. The fans who waited at the corner and the musicians who posted messages were not celebrating a recent release, but a figure whose work has accompanied several generations of Argentine and Latin American listeners.

  • Usina del Arte: three free nights, with advance reservations. Friday featured Marina Wil; Saturday, Mery Granados and Joaco Burgos; Sunday, Vanessa Alanís.
  • Centro Cultural 25 de Mayo: free concert by the Banda Sinfónica de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, with Luis Ceravolo and Ángela Navarro, Friday with advance reservations.

At 75, Charly García received a birthday made of music, affection and collective memory. The shows are free, but the reservations are required: on Friday at the Usina del Arte and at the Centro Cultural 25 de Mayo, and on Saturday and Sunday at the Usina. The Usina del Arte is at Avenida Alicia M. de Justo 1350, in the La Boca neighborhood; the Centro Cultural 25 de Mayo is at Av. de Mayo 2500, in the San Nicolás neighborhood. To reach the Usina del Arte, you can take line H of the Buenos Aires subway to Hospitales and walk a few blocks; to reach the Centro Cultural 25 de Mayo, the closest underground stations are Bolívar and Perú on lines A and B, as well as Avenida de Mayo on line C. The corner where the vigil took place was Santa Fe and Coronel Díaz.
